Hillcrest is an upmarket suburb on the outskirts of Durban, sitting in the cool Natal Midlands foothills at an elevation that keeps temperatures noticeably milder than the coast. It has grown into a well-serviced area with good restaurants, schools, and access to several nature reserves.

Hillcrest sits roughly 25 kilometres west of central Durban along the N3 highway corridor, at an elevation of around 600 metres above sea level. This altitude gives the area a noticeably different climate from the humid coastal city below. Summers are warm but rarely oppressive, and winters are dry and mild, which makes it a comfortable base for visiting the greater Durban region at any time of year.

The suburb is well known among locals for its concentration of lifestyle centres and independent eateries. The Hillcrest Corner and Old Main Road area have developed into a strip of coffee shops, boutique stores, and casual restaurants that draw residents from across the Upper Highway corridor. The area also serves as a gateway to the Valley of a Thousand Hills, a landscape of deep green valleys and traditional Zulu settlements that stretches northward toward Botha's Hill and Drummond.

For those interested in outdoor activity, Krantzkloof Nature Reserve is one of the most accessible green spaces in the region. Located just a few kilometres from the town centre, the reserve covers over 600 hectares of indigenous forest and gorge terrain, with hiking trails that descend into the Molweni River valley. Birdwatching is productive throughout the year, and the forest is home to crowned eagles and various sunbird species.

Finding Hillcrest accommodation is straightforward, with options ranging from guesthouses along Old Main Road to self-catering units in residential estates. Many visitors use Hillcrest as a quieter alternative to staying in central Durban, particularly those attending events at the nearby Shongweni Farmers and Crafters Market, which runs on selected Saturday mornings and is one of the better-known outdoor markets in KwaZulu-Natal.

The Upper Highway area, of which Hillcrest is the commercial hub, also provides reasonable access to the Drakensberg. The N3 runs directly from here toward the mountains, putting popular destinations like Midmar Dam and the Midlands Meander within an hour's drive. This positioning makes Hillcrest useful not just as a destination in itself, but as a practical stopping point for travellers moving between Durban and the interior of KwaZulu-Natal.
