About Freeland Park
Freeland Park sits along KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast, roughly 60 kilometres south of Durban. The area is part of a stretch of coastline that has long been popular with South African families, particularly those from Gauteng and the inland provinces looking for warm-water beach holidays. The Indian Ocean here is generally calmer than the Cape coasts, and the water temperature stays comfortable for swimming through much of the year.
The town of Scottburgh is the closest commercial centre, just a few kilometres away, and provides most of the practical amenities visitors need. Scottburgh has a well-regarded beach, a small shopping area, and several restaurants. The Scottburgh Golf Club is a popular stop for golfers, and the town's tidal pool is a favourite with families travelling with young children.
For those staying in the area, Freeland Park accommodation ranges from self-catering houses and holiday flats to smaller guesthouses, most within walking distance or a short drive from the beach. Self-catering options are particularly common here, which suits groups and families who prefer to cook their own meals and keep to their own schedule.
The broader South Coast offers plenty to do beyond the beach. Crocworld Conservation Centre, located near Scottburgh, is one of the more visited attractions in the region and houses a significant collection of Nile crocodiles alongside other reptiles and wildlife. The Umkomaas area, a short drive north, is well known for scuba diving, particularly for its shark and ray encounters at Aliwal Shoal, one of the more notable dive sites off the South African coast.
Freeland Park itself is a low-key destination. It does not have the commercial development of places like Margate or Scottburgh, which is part of its appeal for visitors who prefer a slower pace. The surrounding landscape is green and subtropical, typical of the KwaZulu-Natal coast, and the proximity to both the beach and the N2 highway makes it a practical base for exploring the wider South Coast.
