Phoenix was established in the 1970s as a planned township to house Indian South Africans displaced during the apartheid era. Today it is home to several hundred thousand residents and functions as a self-contained urban hub within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality.

The area sits roughly 20 kilometres north of central Durban, making it a convenient base for travellers who want access to the city without staying in the heart of it. The N2 and M41 both run nearby, connecting Phoenix to the beachfront suburbs of Durban to the south and to the popular North Coast towns of Ballito and Salt Rock to the north. King Shaka International Airport is approximately 15 kilometres away, which makes Phoenix particularly practical for those arriving by air.

For visitors interested in South African history, Phoenix carries significant weight. It was home to Mahatma Gandhi's Phoenix Settlement, established in 1904, where Gandhi lived and worked during his years in South Africa. The settlement, located on the northern edge of the area, includes the original printing press for his newspaper Indian Opinion and has been preserved as a heritage site. It draws visitors with an interest in Gandhi's political and philosophical development before his return to India.

Phoenix accommodation options tend to be more affordable than those in central Durban or along the beachfront, which suits longer stays or travellers on a tighter budget. The area has a strong food culture rooted in South African Indian cooking, with local restaurants and takeaways serving bunny chow, curry, and roti that reflect the community's culinary traditions. The Phoenix Plaza and surrounding commercial strips provide everyday shopping and services.

The beaches of the Golden Mile are around 25 minutes by car, and uShaka Marine World in Point is similarly accessible. For those who prefer a quieter coastal experience, the beaches north of Umhlanga are a short drive up the N2. Phoenix works best as a base rather than a destination in itself, but for travellers who appreciate community character and historical depth, it offers something that the resort towns along the coast do not.
